Matt Villano authored a nice Q&A about mentoring
that answered many of my questions.  “Won’t you be
my mentor?” describes both sides of the mentoring
interaction referring several leading sources.  It is

Tried “clicking” on the link and found some
may not be able to access it.
So let me provide a brief highlight…

    Mentoring relationships require trust that
    leads to synergy.
Reference: Neil Fiore, “Awaken your strongest
self: break free of stress, inner conflict and
    self-sabotage,” MacGraw-Hill, 2006

    Consider establishing your personal goals
    before developing a mentor.

A mentor can be from a different background,
however, should have the time to spend and
    meet as needed.

More than one mentor is commonly suggested.
